Announcing: The Judges of the Health Activist Awards

by Amanda

The wonderful response we’ve gotten about the 2011 Health Activist Awards is exciting! Your nominations have been incredible and we’ve gotten to meet so many new health leaders who are doing great things in their communities. We hope you’ll keep nominating those you admire for this last week of the year, before we close the nomination period on December 31st.

But now, we are thrilled to announce our Health Activist Judging Panel! We received many great applications and wish we could have chosen all of you. For our first ever Awards, these folks will be our comrades, looking through hundreds of nominations to help select the best of the best. As mentioned before, we will be hosting conference sessions where our Health Activist judges will chat with a WEGO Health team member and decide which nominees will make it to the final 5 where each judge will score the finalists. We will be tallying all the scores and announcing the winners live in our Health Activist Tweetchat on Tuesday, January 31st at 3pm ET. Until then – our lips and proverbial award envelopes will be sealed.

Now, without further ado – the following folks will be taking their Health Activist know-how and helping us decide who should win a 2011 Award! Let’s give them a round of applause…

New Resources for the Joint Pain Community!

by Amanda

We love bringing great new resources to Health Activists and members of the online health community. It is our hope that, by sharing information and resources, we can all encourage patients to lead healthier, more empowered lives. This is why we’re looking forward to sharing these new videos, links, and pages about joint health with you.

You may have seen our Joint Pain Channel over on WEGOHealth.tv that showcases outstanding videos with Health Activists in the Joint Pain Community. We created the channel because we know that education is the first step to being an empowered patient. This is why we’ve added brand new resources to the page to offer even more great information for the Joint Pain Community. The resources include a program that will help patients better understand their joint fitness level through screening. And videos that also provide education and exercises to help patients actively participate in their own joint care.

These new sponsored resources touch upon Self Joint Health Home Screening so patients can assess their own individual joint health. Other resources show detailed exercises for you to try and determine your own personal fitness level. Another featured resource focuses on the ORTHOVISC brand 5 Minute Knee Health Workout that will help people who experience knee pain to strengthen their knees and proactively reduce pain and improve their overall knee health.

Visit the Joint Pain Channel to check it out!

For more information, check out the Orthovisc page on Facebook.

We’re looking forward to hearing what you and your community members think of these new resources and what else you’d like us to add to the Joint Pain Channel!

Health Activist Awards: Best in Show 2011

by Amanda

There are plenty of places around the web to be a Health Activist leader. The variety of platforms is great because it allows everyone to find their niche and excel in what they are passionate about in a way that suits their style. The Best in Show Award recognizes the leaders who embody individual uses of certain platforms and truly shine.

Who do you know that is amazing at one platform or network in particular? These Health Activists made a real splash on one specific platform  in 2011, serving as a leader amongst all users of that medium. This person truly wrote the book about that platform simply through their actions, their progress, and their ability to get everyone involved. They modeled excellence despite any possible platform restrictions to creatively lead their community.

We’ll award one Best in Show 2011 for each of these platforms:

  • Twitter use/Twitter Chat
  • Facebook page or presence
  • Blog
  • Community/Forum

Nominate the Health Activist who blows you away with their skills on a particular platform. Then nominate someone else who dominates another platform!

Health Activist Awards: Best Affirmation Post 2011

by Amanda

Why do people advocate for health conditions, lead communities, share their experiences, and raise awareness? It’s an inner passion that is sometimes challenging to put in to words. Have you read a post written by a Health Activist that really explained their mission perfectly? Let’s commemorate that individual post as an awesome salute to health communities and a testament to Health Activism!

This award goes to the best singular blog post that explains the difficult topic, “Why I do this.” The post delves into why the author is a Health Activist and what keeps them motivated. In fact, if you printed out this particular blog post and gave it to every Health Activist – everyone would be inspired by the writing, the storytelling, and the content. But every Health Activist wouldalso relate – because the post captures exactly why we’re all here.

Did you read a post this year that inspired you to new levels of Health Activism or best encapsulated your mission?  Share it with us for this award!

Health Activist Awards: Best Kept Secret 2011

by Amanda

One of the most important things about these Health Activist Awards is that we recognize awesome leaders who haven’t necessarily gotten all the recognition they deserve – but are still incredibly inspirational and great at what they do. Who is your favorite Health Activist who deserves accolades?

They may fly under the radar, but this Health Activist is a star. They aren’t featured on every top 10 list on the web, or overflowing with followers, “friends,” and audience members. But theyshould be. They are an amazing example of what a Health Activist is. They are an expert communicator, leader, and have so many of the qualities we admire. Who do you love to read and wish could you be friends with? This is their time to shine. When someone’s this great – you want everyone to know.

Help us find the unsung heroes of your community – and sing their praises!

Nominee: Jenn https://www.facebook.com/pages/Action-to-Improve-Maternity-AIM/152428484816411
Nominator: Anonymous
Reason:

Jenn is my wife. Charley is our little girl. Charley had a bad midwife. She went without enough oxygen at her birth because the midwife forgot to clear her throat. Jenn researched Charley’s own case, fought to get answers and assistance, and now helps others do the same thing. She created AIM – self funded at first but recently made into a registered charitable trust – and helps literally hundreds of families like ours. Jenn has also researched our NZ maternity system and tirelessly works at a public and government level to achieve changes to ensure the quality and safety of the service for others. Now she has added fundraiser to her list of work, but does it mainly for the awareness raising it provides. Jenn is also an inventor nowadays – and she provides these fabulous items to families around the world, barely covering her costs. All whilst taking care of Charley and our little boy – and me. She’s Charley’s Angel, and that for many others too, even if they never get to know it.

Nominee: Lushrain http://www.twitter.com/lushrain
Nominator: Rhian http://www.rhiloaded.com

Her unwavering support, not just for my health but also to make sure that I am more than my illness, and stay true to who I still am. Nominee: Laura www.houstonwehaveaproblemblog.com
Nominator: Cheryl www.houstonwehaveaproblemblog.com

Laura blogs often about their family’s life with these diseases but does so much more. She has served as guest speaker for women’s groups to educate about Diabetes, the difference between type 1 and type 2, discusses the possibility of an artificial pancreas for those with diabetes, raised over $12,000 in the walk for the cure for diabetes and also raised over $2000 in the walk for crohn’s, and most recently supported her Mom and aunts as they wrote and published a cookbook to raise $$ for both diseases. She is relentless in educating and supporting these causes while somehow keeping everything at home appearing to r un seamlessly/smoothly . . .which often is not the case. She is up checking Nate’s blood sugar at least 3 times per night and has learned to get by on very little sleep. Laura Houston is an amazing Mom aka Caregiver for these two children, as well as her third child, Emma , , ,No one deserves this award more.

Nominee: Bennet http://www.ydmv.net/ https://twitter.com/#!/BadShoe
Nominator: Kelley https://twitter.com/#!/klocked
Reason:

Bennet is a father of two type 1 diabetics and has been an exceptionally active member of the DOC since he started blogging back in 2007. He’s got advocacy credentials – fundraising for the ADA and JDRF, attending social media summits for Roche and Medtronic, meeting with politicians on a state and federal level – but more than that he offers the perspective of a dad trying to help his kids become well rounded people for whom diabetes is only a small part of their lives. Despite all his work, he consistently flies under the radar – which I’m sure is by design. He never conflates his experience as a caregiver with that of his Type 1 children. His humor, passion and intelligence as – for both his family and the DOC at large – part of the invisible support structure that provides individuals with a safe space to learn and grow.

Reason:

Arden’s Day is an amazing blog written by my brother Scott. Though I only know about the world of type I diabetes because of my niece Arden’s diagnosis, I can say without hesitation that the work Scott does on behalf of Arden and the other children with diabetes is nothing short of inspirational. I hope that you consider his website for your contest.

Nominee: Angil angiltarachrn.blogspot.com www.behindtheoldface.com

Lexi is a wonderful individual who is alway at the center of raising awareness about diabetes.
