As we’re talking about all month long – a health blogger is a special kind of writer. Health bloggers draw upon a few key, unique skills when writing: storytelling, providing insightful (and correct) information, translating research, delivering the patient or caregiver perspective with honesty, and balancing positivity and truth while still giving tough topics the justice they require.
Here at WEGO Health we love to celebrate the Health Activist writer and are always so impressed by how multi-faceted the backgrounds, interests, and styles of all health bloggers are. The online health blogger community is a great one to be a part of. So if you’re looking to start a blog to communicate with your health community – you have quite a bit to glean from the greats who have come before. But don’t worry – there are a lot of little, helpful tips you can incorporate as you write.
In fact – it’s no secret that, even if you’re a seasoned blogger – there are always new things to try. No one’s perfect at everything but everyone certainly has something special to offer the blogosphere.
So for our March Coaching Session, we’ve compiled 101 tips for better health blogging that we’ve collected over the years. The tips range from new ideas to helpful reminders. We hope they encourage you to keep improving your craft and help to renew your dedication to inspiring the members of your health community.
Here are a few of the tips we share in our 101 Tips for Better Health Blogging:
2. Make sure your blog is easy to navigate for new users – if it’s too hard to find what they want, they’ll likely move on.
9. Allow for time off when your health (or your mental health!) needs it. Schedule blog vacations!
10. Subscribe to at least a few blogs or resources that focus on writing, blogging, or copywriting to help strengthen your writing and hone your craft.
21. Be consistent! Stick with your voice, stay to topics that suit your theme, blog regularly.
25. Vary your post types and post length but pay attention to what types of posts get the most engagement by your readers.
30. Speak up for your community – if you have a problem, others probably do too. Share what’s not going well and how you’re handling it.
36. Respect other viewpoints and welcome feedback.
44. Create a blogging schedule that works for you. How often will you post? Which days will you write? What is the best time of day to buckle down and write?
50. Check in on who is reading your posts and what sort of posts they like best. This will help you know your audience and give them more of what they like!
52. When developing the plan for your blog, remember to think about how your blog will handle (or not) sponsorships, advertising, or sponsored posts.
71. Participate in a blog week (day, month) for your condition. Don’t have one? Create it!
80. Include sharing tools for your blog and your posts – make it easy for your readers to share your content with others online.
95. Discuss common threads between your condition and others
