“I have thyroid disease and for a while I was knocked sideways by it. Really and truly utterly lost and bereft, I couldn’t think straight, I was wiped out, my sense of self was utterly challenged, I had to give up my job. I had no idea really what was going on. It was very scary. Before I got ill I didn’t even know what a thyroid was. Now I know it’s a gland that can cause a LOT of problems when it goes wrong. Usually thyroid disease is easily treated but for a significant minority it isn’t. I felt it was important to raise awareness of thyroid disease and also to make doctors more aware of the issues patients face when they don’t respond quickly to the standard treatment. There’s a lot of information online about thyroid disease, lots of it not necessarily reliable. I share links to medically approved information as well as writing about my journey with the illness and getting well again and I also write about a support group I have set up since starting to feel better, working with the British Thyroid Foundation. the blog gives me an outlet and lets me connect with others who may at different stages in their own journey with thyroid disease, or other chronic conditions. I know some doctors read it too and if I can make a difference to the treatment even just one other thyroid patient may receive as a result I am happy.”
